Is Hardwood Right for You?
Hardwood is the most requested floor in our showroom, and for good reason. It is also not the right answer for every room. Here is the honest case, both sides.
Timeless Beauty
Adds Value
Refinishable
Hundreds of Styles
The case for hardwood
- Warm and genuinely timeless, it never dates
- Adds real resale value to the home
- Refinishable, so it can be renewed for decades
- The widest choice of species, widths, and finishes
- Ages into character rather than wearing out
Where it struggles
- Not for wet areas: bathrooms, basements, laundry
- Can dent under heavy impact or narrow furniture legs
- Moves with big humidity swings, so it needs a stable room
- Higher upfront cost than luxury vinyl or laminate
- Needs a dry, flat, properly prepared subfloor
Wet rooms? Choose differently.
For bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms, waterproof luxury vinyl gives you the same wood look without the moisture risk. A very common setup is hardwood in the living and sleeping areas, luxury vinyl everywhere water lives.

The Hardwood Buying Guide
Ten decisions stand between you and the right floor. Work through them in order and the choice narrows itself.
Oak is the default for a reason: it takes stain predictably and hides wear. Hickory and maple are harder and better for busy homes. Walnut is softer but unmatched for depth of colour. Ask for the Janka hardness number if pets or heavy traffic are a concern.
Narrow strip (2 to 3 inches) reads traditional and busy. Wide plank (6 to 9 inches) reads calm and modern, shows more grain, and makes a room feel larger. Wider boards move more with humidity, so engineered construction is the safer pick above about 5 inches
Matte and low-satin hide dust, scratches, and footprints, which is why nearly everything we sell now lands there. High gloss looks dramatic in photos and shows every mark in real life.
